At the Civil War Reenactment on September 26th, 2025, students from St. George School and Hermann Public School visited Hermann Farm to learn about how people lived and served their side in the war. One of the stations showed the students how a doctor worked with his patients that were injured. They also showed students what types of guns, such as Lever actions and pistols, that were used in the war. At another station, a lady showed what women did while the men were on the battlefield. The women knitted and cooked. They hosted the reenactment because they wanted people to learn about events that happened in the Civil War and how people felt about the war. Corey Orr, a Hermann resident, spoke about his experience when he was part of a past Civil War reenactment and stated, “The Civil War reenactment is a good way to honor the soldiers who fought in the Civil War.” See below for more from the interview with Corey Orr.
Interview with Corey Orr
How long have you been involved in Civil War reenactments?
“I started shortly after college when I could afford the stuff to do it. So around eight or nine years when I finally started putting stuff together. I wanted to be a part of the most authentic job I could find. It takes a lot of research and reading books to learn how people lived back then.”
What did your role mean to you and why?
“I wanted the grunt experience and the private infantry and the least important role. I want to be the one being told what to do. I want to have a realistic experience that every man experienced during the conflict. It is a good way to honor the soldiers who fought in the Civil War.”
What do you think people can learn from this event?
“I hope people will go look it up and do a little research on this event. I hope people will gain interest by looking at the event themselves.”
How does Captain Charles Campbell Manwaring inspire you?
“He was a respected local leader who suspected something was wrong and he tried to stop the men from crossing on to the fairy and even though he ended up getting shot by them trying to stop them.”
